A childhood in seaside Pembrokeshire provides the setting and atmosphere for Claire Back’s first crime novel.
A Deadly Summer follows detective Nia Tremeyrick as an old case resurfaces in a pre-digital world. The story takes place before mobile phones, automatic number-plate recognition and cameras became part of everyday police work.
Back drew on her memories of Tenby and Saundersfoot, including life around family-run guesthouses and the distinctive rhythm of a busy seaside town in the 1980s.
Crime fiction with a strong sense of place
The novel blends a traditional murder mystery with a strong sense of place. Early reviews praised its pace, detail and coastal atmosphere, making it a natural summer read for West Wales crime fans.
