Plas Nanteos is one of West Wales’ most important historic properties, with Georgian grandeur layered over a far older story.
Set in the Paith valley around three miles from Aberystwyth, the Grade I listed mansion stands among landscaped grounds, ancient woodland and its own lake. Cadw describes Nanteos as the major surviving Georgian house of the region.
The present mansion dates from 1739 to 1757, though a much earlier manor house, Neuadd Llawdden, survives beneath it in the cellars. Original features include the staircase, while later additions include an impressive Rococo saloon.
A house with centuries beneath its floors
At its height, the Nanteos estate covered around 33,000 acres across Cardiganshire. The house later became a country hotel following a major restoration, and its 23 bedrooms, formal rooms, stable courtyard, coach house and walled garden now offer a rare opportunity for its next chapter.
