Away from the busiest coastal routes, the Gwili Valley reveals a gentler Carmarthenshire shaped by river, railway and industry.
The River Gwili winds north from Carmarthen through a landscape of wooded slopes, small settlements and quiet roads. The valley feels remote in places, yet traces of a busy industrial past remain close to the surface.
Old railway infrastructure and the preserved Gwili Railway tell part of the story. The route once linked rural communities and carried the products of local industry, while today heritage trains give visitors a slower view of the countryside.
A hidden Carmarthenshire journey
Millson suggests seeing the valley from the raised rear section of the 460 bus towards Cardigan. From there, the bends of the road reveal old bridges, railway cuttings and scenery with an unexpectedly mountainous character.
